What does undetectable = untransmittable (U=U) mean?
When a person with HIV is on effective treatment, it reduces the amount of HIV in blood. When the levels are very low (below 20 copies/ml), it’s called an undetectable viral load or being virally suppressed. At this point, HIV cannot be transmitted through sex. Condoms are not needed to prevent HIV transmission, but is still necessary to prevent other sexually transmitted infections.Â
